Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional disorder of the gastrointestinal tract that causes abdominal pain and altered bowel habits. Thankfully, there are lifestyle changes and medications that can help to keep symptoms at bay. At Centers for Gastroenterology, our team of skilled providers can help to improve your well-being with innovative treatment options.
What is Irritable Bowel Syndrome?
IBS is a functional disorder of the gastrointestinal tract. This condition is chronic, meaning that it can require long-term management and attention. However, there are options to manage symptoms. IBS is not linked to more complicated future issues. The exact cause remains undetermined, but increased muscle contractions, nervous system issues, infection, stress during early periods of life, and imbalances with microbes may all play a role in the emergence of this condition. Poor diet and stress can also cause symptoms to emerge or worsen.
Many people with IBS experience symptoms that are relatively mild in nature. Because this is a chronic condition, however, they can be persistent. They might include:
- Pain or bloating in the abdominal area
- Distinct changes in stool appearance
- Changes in the frequency of bowel movements
- Gas
- Mucus found during bowel movements
There is no definitive test for IBS, it can be diagnosed by symptoms alone or by performing tests to rule out other causes. Once the condition has been diagnosed, there is a range of treatments that our team offers to improve and manage symptoms. Dietary changes–like an increase in fiber and water consumption–and exercise may be recommended. Medications may be prescribed to manage pain, diarrhea, or constipation, and probiotics have also proven to be effective for some patients.
