What is Crohn’s Disease?
Crohn’s disease is a type of inflammatory bowel disease that leads to persistent inflammation of the tissues in the digestive tract. This condition can affect multiple areas, though it is most often rooted in the small intestine. It can spread to other areas of the digestive tract, as well. An exact cause has not been identified, but this disease is more prevalent in people who have a familial history of the disease, as well as people who may have unusual immune responses.
This disease can cause incredibly uncomfortable symptoms for patients, ranging from mild symptoms to debilitating ones. These symptoms can develop over a period of time or emerge suddenly, and they can also seem to disappear and reemerge. Symptoms typical of Crohn’s disease include:
- Diarrhea or blood during bowel movements
- Fever
- Tiredness
- Discomfort or pain in the abdominal region
- Sores in the mouth
- Unexpected weight loss
- Pain and/or drainage in the anal area
- Inflammation of other body parts, including eyes, joints, and liver
- Anemia
- In children, delayed development
